About the United Methodist Church
The United Methodist Church (UMC) is a global church. John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Movement, placed primary emphasis on Christian living by putting faith and love into action. This emphasis on what Wesley referred to as “practical divinity” has continued to challenge United Methodism today to be a church concerned with what is going on in the world and to be a church that impacts the world by how we live out our faith.
Our Beliefs
United Methodists share basic beliefs in common with most Christian communities. We believe one God is the Creator of our entire universe. That same God exists in three persons whom we refer to as the Trinity. These three expressions of God are Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God is both holy and loving, both just and merciful.
We believe in Jesus Christ (Son), who lived, then died on a cross, rose from the dead and ascended into heaven and will one day return again to the earth. Jesus Christ is central to our Christian faith as He is our savior and redeemer as witnessed in the Gospels of the New Testament.
United Methodists use four sources when making decisions about our faith: the bible, tradition, reason and experience, with scripture being our central source.
